Veteran Nollywood Actor Francis Duru Dies at 57 After Brief Illness

Veteran Nigerian actor Francis Duru, one of Nollywood’s familiar faces, has died at the age of 57, prompting an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans across the entertainment industry.

His death was confirmed by his family in a statement shared through his verified Instagram account. The family said the actor passed away following a brief illness and appealed for prayers, love and understanding during their period of mourning.

The statement read: “We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”

The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, also announced the loss in a tribute, describing Duru as another great thespian gone.

Seun Oloketuyi, founder of the Best of Nollywood Awards, equally confirmed the news in a social media post.

A career spanning decades

Born on July 27, 1969, Duru built a career spanning several decades in Nigeria’s film industry. He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt and became known for his performances in Nigerian films.

He gained wider recognition through his role in the 1995 film Rattlesnake, directed by the late Amaka Igwe. Over the years, he appeared in numerous productions and established himself as a respected actor in Nollywood.

Duru also served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010 and received recognition for his contributions to the creative industry.

Beyond acting, he worked as a master of ceremonies, consultant and voice-over artist, reflecting his involvement in several areas of entertainment and communication.
