Australia Offers Cheaper Student Visas to Citizens of 23 Countries: One Key Condition Explained

Australia | Immigration | Education
Australia has introduced a reduced visa application charge for eligible citizens of 23 countries applying for its Student visa (subclass 500), providing financial relief to students from selected Pacific Island nations, Timor-Leste and Southeast Asian countries.
However, eligibility depends on meeting a specific requirement: applicants must hold and use a valid passport issued by an eligible country when submitting their application.
According to reports published by Legit.ng and other outlets, the concession comes amid broader changes to Australia's student visa fees and immigration rules.
The One Condition Applicants Must Meet
The key requirement is possession and use of a valid passport from one of the eligible countries when applying through Australia's online immigration system, ImmiAccount.
Eligible applicants do not need to submit a separate request for the concession. The reduced charge is applied through the application process, subject to the applicable rules.
Family members included in a qualifying applicant's application may also benefit from the reduced charge.
Full List of Eligible Countries
The concession covers the following countries:
Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste
- Federated States of Micronesia
- Fiji
- Kiribati
- Nauru
- Palau
- Papua New Guinea
- Republic of the Marshall Islands
- Samoa
- Solomon Islands
- Timor-Leste
- Tonga
- Tuvalu
- Vanuatu
Southeast Asian countries
- Brunei Darussalam
- Cambodia
- Indonesia
- Laos
- Malaysia
- Myanmar
- Philippines
- Singapore
- Thailand
- Timor-Leste
- Vietnam
Timor-Leste appears in both groupings, accounting for the reported total of 23 countries. Its citizens are assessed under the applicable Pacific regional concession.
The concession also covers specified applications in the Independent English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) and Non-Awards sectors.
How Much Does an Australian Student Visa Cost?
The standard Student visa application charge for the primary applicant increased to AUD 2,500 from July 1, 2026. Eligible applicants from the specified countries retain access to concessional arrangements.
The precise amount payable depends on the applicable visa provisions and circumstances. Applicants should consult the Australian Department of Home Affairs' official fee information before submitting an application.

What the Changes Mean for Nigerian Students
Nigerian citizens are not included in the list of countries eligible for this particular concession.
Consequently, Nigerian students should not assume that they qualify for the reduced application charge simply because they intend to study in Australia. They should check the current fee and eligibility requirements for their individual visa application.
The concession is a country-specific arrangement, not a general reduction available to all international students.
Other Student Visa Changes to Note
Australia has also introduced changes affecting student visa applications from October 2, 2026.
Under the reported changes, most student visa holders face restrictions on lodging another Student visa application from within Australia, subject to specified exemptions. Restrictions have also been introduced concerning the inclusion of partners and dependent children in applications and subsequent-entry arrangements.
Students planning to relocate with family or extend their studies should review the current rules carefully before making financial or travel commitments.
What Applicants Should Do
Prospective students should:
- Confirm that their passport nationality qualifies for the concession.
- Check the current visa application charge on the official Australian immigration website.
- Review the requirements for their intended course and visa category.
- Confirm the rules on defendants and subsequent applications.
- Avoid making non-refundable travel or accommodation commitments before understanding their visa conditions.
Note:
Australia's reduced student visa charge offers a targeted financial concession to eligible applicants from selected Pacific Island and Southeast Asian countries. The benefit is not available to every international student, and Nigerian applicants are not included in this specific arrangement.
For prospective students, checking the official eligibility criteria and current fees is essential before applying.
