Soweto Teacher Accused of Raping 9-Year-Old Pupil Hands Himself Over to Police

South Africa | Crime and Courts | October 22, 2026
A teacher accused of raping a nine-year-old Grade 4 pupil at Busisiwe Primary School in Zola, Soweto, has reportedly handed himself over to police following public protests and intervention by Gauteng education authorities. Police confirmed that he would face a rape charge, according to reports published on October 22. The allegations have intensified concerns about child protection and safety in South African schools.
What happened?
According to reports, the alleged incident took place on October 8, 2026, at Busisiwe Primary School. The teacher is accused of following the pupil into a school toilet, where the alleged rape occurred. The child’s family subsequently raised concerns about the matter, and the case drew public attention after residents protested outside the school.
The teacher reportedly presented himself at Jabulani police station on Wednesday evening, October 21. Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that he had handed himself over and would be charged with rape. The teacher’s name has not been published in the cited report because he had not yet appeared in court.
Education authorities respond
Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile visited the school on October 21 and placed the teacher on precautionary suspension while the matter was investigated.
The provincial education department also arranged psychological and emotional support for the pupil and her family. Officials appealed for calm and responsible reporting as police and departmental investigations continued.
The case has also attracted attention from South Africa’s Parliament. Joy Maimela, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, called for swift justice, stronger child-protection safeguards and strict enforcement of procedures governing the employment of people who work with children.
Why this case matters
The allegations raise serious questions about child safeguarding, supervision and the procedures schools follow when reports of sexual abuse are made.
Schools have a responsibility to provide safe learning environments, respond promptly to allegations and ensure children can access appropriate support without being exposed to further harm. A thorough investigation is essential to establish the facts and determine whether any additional institutional failures occurred.
Legal note: The allegations have not been established as proven guilt. The accused is entitled to due process, and the court must determine the case based on the evidence. The child’s identity should remain protected.
